International Training Program
Historically, NGOs enjoyed an impartial neutral acdeptance, even when working in insecure environments. Recently, however, NGOs have found themselves specifically chosen as targets of opportunity because of their traditional, non-violent, impartial status.
| 25,000 kidnappings in the last decade
Humanitarian workers murdered
Car-jacking on the rise |
How severe is the problem? No one really knows for sure. Records have not been kept of security incidents involving humanitarian aid workers, but the United States government believes the problem is serious and now requires agencies to have area specific security plans prior to grant approvals.
To address this problem, CWS has developed a security training seminar as part of its total security program. A program it takes to the field where it is needed most. A program that addresses the needs of the organization, the people in the field, and the requirements of the U.S. Government.
The Church World Service International Security Training addresses:
    Risk Management
    Personal Protection Procedures
    Conflict Management
    Operational Alerts
    Site Security
    Vehicles and Transport
    Communications
    Hostage Situations
    Explosive Devices
    Land Mines
WMD - Biological and Chemical Threats
    Emergency Survival
    Armed Protection
    Evacuation Procedures
    Incident Reporting
Development of Agency Specific Safety & Security Policies
CWS Security Specialists utlize cooperative learning techniques coupled with hands-on field exercises to promote the learning process.
Participants learn proper procedures:
    When carrying money
    At checkpoints
    While traveling in threatening situations
    During emergency evacuations
Procedures that may save their lives.
| The Church World Service International Security Training Program is based on the recommendations of the USAID-OFDA and InterAction security training curriculum. This program is a four-day event, designed for management and field level personnel. IT is open to all NGOs wishing to participate. Each participant will receive a printed copy of the CWS Security Manual.
