About the Program

MISSION STATEMENT:
The mission of the Church World Service International Security Program is to provide Non-Governmental Organizations, missionaries, and humanitarian aid workers, with area-specific security training and professional security services and consultation in order to improve safety in insecure environments, thereby enabling delivery of the best possible relief and development programs.

PROGRAM HISTORY:
Our pilot program was hosted by CWS-Pakistan/Afghanistan in 1999, just outside Islamabad. In all, we had 35 participants from Pakistan and Afghanistan. The program was an exceptional success.

To date, we have trained over 2,500 participants throughout the world. Security trainings have been conducted in:
  • Indonesia
  • India
  • Bosnia
  • Cambodia
  • Ghana
  • Haiti
  • Jordan
  • Kenya
  • Liberia
  • Pakistan
  • Serbia
  • Switzerland
  • Tajikistan
  • Uzbekistan
  • United States

In 2004, two new programs were added to our list of training services, the CWS Security Driver's Training and the CWS Chemical/Biological Preparedness Training. The CWS Security Driver's Training focuses on proper driving techniques and advanced driving skills for insecure environments. The CWS Chemical/Biological Preparedness Training focuses on preparing staff for emergency shelter-in-place plans, decontamination and mass contamination.

OBJECTIVES:

  • To raise the participant's level of awareness regarding security.

  • To provide managers and field staff with the information/tools necessary for operating in insecure environments.

    GOAL:
Our goal is to improve safety and security in insecure environments, thereby enabling delivery of the best possible relief and development programs.
